Accessible learning style

As dyslexia often runs in families, it is recognized that some people teaching a dyslexic child may experience difficulties with spelling, comprehension and math/s themselves. With this in mind, the course meerials have been specially designed to be visually accessible to students, with illustrations on almost every page, and very clear layout of information.

Two Routes to learning

Two Routes through the course have been provided to meet individual students' training needs:
The Regular or Standard Route:
On this Route, students will study the course and online material, and learn about teaching a dyslexic child without actually working through the Practical Exercises with a child at the time. For this Route, there are five short Assignments.
The Practical Route:
On this Route, students will choose 15 (out of the 60) short Practical exercises to carry out one-on-one with a child who is, or may be, dyslexic, or who is having difficulties with reading, spelling, writing or math/s.
A Mixture of the Two Routes:
The course is flexible, and for each Module, students may choose whether they wish to follow the Regular/Standard Route or the Practical Route.

Examples of Routes different students may take

For example, a parent home-schooling a dyslexic child may choose to take the Practical Route, doing the Exercises with their child at home. However, a teacher or a classroom assistant may not have the opportunity to work with an individual child one-on-one, or may be working with classes or groups of children all the time. They may choose to do the course through the Regular/Standard Route.

Course materials

The course materials consist of:

The Course Book (180 pages)
The CD-Rom (containing 86 documents)
The Course Website with more course information and a link to the Students' Discussion Group.
The online Discussion Group to which all students (and ex-students) may contribute, ask questions, clarify details, etc.

Straightforward assignments

Assignments may be practical exercises or conventional essay-type answers. Assignments must be sent to your tutor by email.

Grades

There are two possible grades for each Module: Pass or Repeat. A Certificate is awarded when a student has achieved a Pass grade in each of the five Modules. If a student is asked to repeat a piece of work, advice will be provided about how it may be improved, and students may repeat Assignments as many times as they wish.

Length of the Dyslexia Certificate course

The course is estimated to take up to 100 hours of study. It will normally be completed in six months (about three or four hours study each week), but students are allowed up to one year (or more if there are any particular personal or family circumstances).

Fees

The fees for the course, are listed here. Our aim is to provide training in the best teaching methods for dyslexic children for as many teachers and parents as possible, and the course fees are deliberately kept at an affordable level.

Group Discount

If you are thinking of running the Dyslexia Certificate course as a group enterprise, we will be happy to help and advise. Teaching and learning groups like this provide a really valuable activity, giving opportunities for group learning and discussion, in addition to individual study. Your group may be parents, teachers, classroom assistants, learning support assistants, or any other interested people. A 10% discount is provided for groups of three or more people.

Some colleges find our course helpful as a way of updating staff with the needs of dyslexic students, or as an additional module in an education course when there is not the relevant expertise among the staff. Local dyslexia associations have also found the course helpful for a group of their members.

Feedback about the course

'Thank you for all your advice and encouragement throughout the course.  I found this course excellent. It has given me the methods, tips and advice needed to support and teach. The exercises were clearly laid out and very effective. By using these methods the educational life of a seven year old is changing from stress to success.' (N.G., Co. Tipperary, Ireland)

'I will be taking the advanced course you offer and I hope that I will learn even more ways to help the dyslexic child in my class be successful.  Thank you so much for offering this course.  I know it has helped me to be a better teacher.' (P.H., Lexington, Ohio, USA)

'I played the pairs game with my daughter.  My daughter won the game and wanted to immediately play again. She was beaming!  I added a few harder words as my daughter regularly confuses 'b' with 'd' and I thought this may be a fun way to help.  She easily managed to beat me!  It was good to see my daughter so happy playing an educational game, her confidence increased.  We have since played this several times and she loves to beat mummy every time.' (D.P., Maldon, Essex, UK.)

'I would like to say that this course has given me invaluable information, and to listen to some of the other students commenting on the forum and willingly give information just to help out is very moving.  Thank you for your work that  you do and making it available for us to network with each other.' (D.B., British Columbia, Canada)

'This course has been invaluable in helping me understand how to help my daughter and how it has then made such a difference in her schooling as she will be moving out of the support class and in mainstream school in a few weeks. This has a lot to do with what knowledge I have gained from this course and then passing this on to the teachers. Also it has helped my daughter's knowledge and understanding how she can help herself.' (S.D., North Wales, UK)

'I am so glad to have undertaken this course and have learnt so much that I use actively in my day to day teaching.  The children in my care have benefited greatly.  Thank you so much and keep up the good work.' (H.M., Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

'I did get approval from the University to use this course in place of an elective, so that is positive.' (K.M., Worcester, MA, USA)

'Throughout the course I am continuously amazed with what I am learning.  To fully have a better understanding and insight into dyslexia has truly uncovered many answers for myself as a parent of a child who I am sure has dyslexia.' (R.A., Port Hedland, Australia)

'I want to say Thank You so much for this course. I have learned so much about my son.  I feel he has made a lot of progress since I started it.  I have a lot more patience when he reads or prints something.  He still doesn't like to read but when he does he seems to enjoy it a lot more now.  He is not as frustrated all the time (when doing school work).  His confidence is starting to get better too.  I know it all takes time and patience.  Thanks again.' (B.H., Nova Scotia, Canada)

'Thanks so much for your input on my assignment. I like your idea about putting a part of it on the discussion forum. I am really enjoying this course!' (M.S., Guangzhou, China)

'I am taking this course as part of a college credit for achieving my doctorate in physical therapy.' (M.K., Wylie, TX, USA)
